The Dark Knight Rises

The Dark Knights Rises was awesome!  It might be my favourite of the three Christopher Nolan/Christian Bale Batman movies.  This final film was a fantastic end onto the trilogy.  I thought all the actors were wonderful.  There was depth, change and surprises.  Certain things I predicted or foresaw as the story played out, but not in a bad way.  Other things were unexpected.

My hubby and I were surprised to see that the movie was rated PG.  We expected a PG-13 rating.  For a few minutes, I think we were concerned that a PG rating would mean the movie would somehow lack something.  It did.  Blood.  People got shot and stabbed (a lot), but there were never any bloody pools beneath the bodies.  You never saw exactly where the bullet holes were.  A gun was fired and someone fell.  That’s it.  I don’t think it took away from the story-telling though.  I didn’t even realize it until the movie was over.  I suppose by doing that (among other things I’m unaware of) they were able to keep the film PG.  Still, I’m not sure I’d take a five-year-old to see this movie.

There is so much I wish I could talk about, but it would spoil the movie.  I have to say that I loved the ending.  It was an end full of possibility.  It was an end I didn’t quite expect.  I know it isn’t exactly comic book accurate, but I think it stayed true to the version of Batman that Nolan and Bale created.

I had to look up 12, 14 and 15.  I also posted last year's list.  Scrooge McDuck, last year's number 1 isn't even on the list this year.  Smaug came up from last year's 7th place finish.  Also, how is Lisbeth Salander on this list?  I've only read the first book, maybe I need to read the other two?

The Dark Knight

Everyone needs to go see The Dark Knight, if you haven't seen it already. It was dark and disturbing. The Dark Knight is an excellent telling of Batman's struggles with himself, his enemies and his city. There were parts where I actually needed to hold Craig's hand; I could see the danger coming. I know Harvey Dent's potential for darkness and I know the Joker's sneaky subterfuge. I was waiting for the betrayal of Gordon's men and wasn't disappointed.

The new suit was fantastic. Christian Bale was fantastic. Heath Ledger was creepy, the most insane version of the joker I think I've ever seen. You could tell from the Joker's final lines that they wanted the possibility of bringing the Joker back in future Batman movies. I loved Two-Face’s face. It was like many of the cartoons and comics I’ve seen. Scary and wonderfully raw; one of my favourite things. The Joker too, the makeup was crazy! Each suit, each costume for all the characters, was so precise and individual, I can’t help but be amazed by it.

Am I gushing yet? I think I might be. The Dark Knight is breaking records and it should. It really is one of the best movies I’ve ever seen. You don’t need to have seen Batman Begins or really know anything about Batman to enjoy this movie. It exists for all movies lovers to enjoy.

The Prestige

The Prestige was surprisingly great. I suppose I didn’t take much note of it when it was out in theatres. We decided to watch it this past weekend, I had only vaguely heard of it. I did not realize that I would be seeing Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale, Michael Caine and Scarlett Johansson. All actors that I think are fantastic. They were fantastic in The Prestige.

There were so many twists and turns. The story constantly looked back to the past for the answer to present problems. The movie is haunting; filled with death and secrets and lies. It is with me still. The twist at the end is so unexpected. Though, it seems obvious now. The simplest answer, after all. However, with everything that happened during the course of the story, the end could have been anything.
