Say It Right!

I found this list at Literary Musings a few days ago.  I think it’s awesome.  I've often had my own name mispronounced, so I can see how helpful a list like this would be.  via Buzzfeed.  Enjoy!

  1. Just the other day I was thinking of Thoreau's last name and wondering which was most appropriate. Thanks. :)

  2. Ack, I've been butchering some of these until now :P The only ones I got right were Groening and Thoreau. Great resource, thanks!

  3. Very useful list, thanks for posting it. The number of people at work who ask for Jodi Pick-cult books is astonishing (or not). But then, there were several here I needed educating on too.

  6. Ouch! I've been terrible with these. It reminds me of Bjork. Apparently it correctly rhymes with "work," not "fork." But I still say it the first way. Say "Byerk" and you get funny looks.

  7. That made me laugh.
I do something very strange and pronounce the "s" in Barthes, which is most unusual for a French speaker! I guess I've been in Ireland too long...

  8. smellincoffee, probably it's because I took French up until my first year of university, but I didn't even think there was another way to say Thoreau's name.

Teacher, glad you like it, I think it's brilliant.

Katie, it's a great reference, even if you have most of them right.

    Rachel, thanks for the link!

John, hahaha! That's so true. I don't think I've ever heard someone say, "Byerk".

Em, that is strange. But we do pick up the habits of the places we live.
